The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has defeated the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the polling unit of the Minister of Defence, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, during Saturday’s Garki-Babura Federal Constituency bye-election in Jigawa State.
Naija News reports that the election took place at polling unit 001 of Babura Kofar Arewa Primary School, where the minister, a former governor of the state and APC chieftain, cast his vote amid tight security.
While APC secured 112 votes, PDP clinched victory with 308 votes at the minister’s polling unit.
The Defence Minister, who served as the immediate past governor of Jigawa, exercised his franchise but left the venue without addressing journalists.
Security was beefed up in the area, with operatives of the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and other agencies deployed to maintain law and order.
Polling Officer 1 at the unit, Mr Ibrahim Shehu, told newsmen that the exercise was smooth.
At Primary Yamma (005), the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad, lauded the peaceful conduct of the polls and expressed optimism about APC’s chances.
Despite the election, commercial activities went on in parts of the constituency. Some residents continued with their normal businesses while voting was ongoing.
Reports also indicated relatively high turnout of voters in most polling units across Babura and Garki Local Government Areas.
