Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Parma centre-back, Giovanni Leoni, in a deal worth £26 million plus add-ons, taking their total transfer spending this summer to £321.5 million.
The 18-year-old has agreed a six-year contract at Anfield, becoming the club’s sixth major arrival of the window.
Liverpool’s spending now ranks as the third-highest by a Premier League side in a single transfer window. If they complete a move for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, expected to cost well over £100 million, the Reds could set a new all-time summer spending record.
Leoni’s arrival comes as Liverpool target defensive reinforcements following the sale of academy graduate Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for £35 million. Ibrahima Konate is also in the final year of his current deal.
The Reds moved swiftly to secure Leoni’s signature amid interest from top Italian clubs and other Premier League teams.
Reports in England asserted that the Italian teenager was determined to join Arne Slot’s Premier League champions, and any possibility of a loan move away from Anfield has been ruled out.
Leoni will immediately link up with the first-team squad for the 2025/26 season and is expected to attend Liverpool’s season opener against Bournemouth at Anfield at 8 p.m. tonight, August 15.
Despite their heavy investment, Liverpool have offset much of their spending through player sales. Seven first-team players have departed for a combined total exceeding £200 million, including Luis Diaz to Barcelona for £65 million and Darwin Nunez to Paris Saint-Germain for £56.6 million.
