Former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has declared his support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Alex Adamu, ahead of Saturday’s by-election for the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency seat.
Naija News reports that El-Rufai made his interest known when he stormed Chikun Local Government Area on Wednesday.
El-Rufai was accompanied by notable political allies and coalition leaders, including the North West ADC Chairman, Jafaru Sani; former Chief of Staff, Bashir Sa’idu; former Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Hafsat Baba; Kaduna State Social Democratic Party (SDP) Chairman, Nasiru Maikano; and other senior party officials.
Although still recognised by the Kaduna State SDP executives as a member, El-Rufai was expelled by the party’s national leadership and banned for 30 years.
His decision not to formally join the ADC has drawn attention, with party officials clarifying that coalition leaders such as El-Rufai and the Labour Party’s Peter Obi were given room to conclude ongoing by-elections under their current party banners.
It was, however, learnt that the SDP in Kaduna State chose not to present a candidate in the poll, instead throwing its weight behind the ADC contender.
The campaign train toured several communities, including Nassarawa, Kujama, and Rido, attracting large crowds of supporters.
Speaking with journalists, Hafsat Baba revealed that El-Rufai urged residents to vote for ADC candidates across Kaduna State, reiterating the coalition’s commitment to reserve 50% of party positions for youth and 35% for women.
She added that the former governor also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a fair and credible process.
“Everywhere we went, people came out in large numbers. We are now moving to Nassarawa after visiting Kujama and Rido. Tomorrow (Thursday), Malam will be in Zaria for the by-elections in Zaria/Kewaye and Sabon Gari to present our candidates,” Baba told Daily Trust.
Naija News reports that the Chikun/Kajuru by-election is widely expected to be one of the most keenly contested races in Kaduna State.
