Anthony Joshua could swap the bright lights of London for the heat of Accra, as the British-Nigerian born boxer eyes his first professional fight in Africa, with Ghana leading the race to host it.
The former two-time world champion’s team jetted into the Ghanaian capital this week, touring the 40,000-seater Accra Sports Stadium and holding high-level talks about staging the mega event, according to Daily Star.
“Anthony Joshua is considering a fight in Africa as he mulls over his next boxing opponent, which could be against social media star Jake Paul,” the British tabloid revealed.
“Joshua’s reps flew out to Accra this week to look at venues and hold talks about staging a fight there. But it is only one of several options for the Watford warrior.”
Joshua, whose parents are Nigerian, has never hidden his dream of bringing big-time boxing back to Africa. Now, after suffering a knockout loss to Daniel Dubois last September and undergoing elbow surgery in May, he is plotting a blockbuster return in early 2026.
Matchroom Boxing boss Frank Smith and long-time adviser Freddie Cunningham led the Ghana visit, holding exploratory meetings with key figures in the sport and entertainment sectors.
Possible opponents for the African fight include French Olympic champion Tony Yoka and DR Congo-born heavyweight Martin Bakole. Yoka, who has signed with Queensberry Promotions, is pushing for the clash and could be ready by late 2025.
Joshua is also in talks for a high-profile, and hugely profitable, showdown with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. While the fight would be a money-spinner, insiders say it “would offer little or no test” for the Watford warrior.
In another twist, retired American legend Andre Ward has thrown his hat into the ring, though his lack of heavyweight credentials makes the matchup a long shot.
Joshua still has his sights set on a dream fight with Tyson Fury, if the ‘Gypsy King’ decides to end his latest retirement.
If the deal for Joshua to fight in Accra goes through, it would be the biggest boxing night in Ghana since Azumah Nelson ruled the ring, and a chance for the Nigerian-born boxer to etch his name alongside Muhammad Ali, who famously fought in Zaire in 1974.
