
Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretary, Sir Rex Chuma Onyeabo, has died at the age of 80.
Naija News reports that his family confirmed that he passed away peacefully on August 7 in Enugu.
Born in Enugu State, Onyeabo was a founding member of the PDP and served as the party’s National Secretary in 1999.
He was also a member of the PDP Board of Trustees until his death.
Beyond politics, he was the Eze-Ugo I of Abuja Igbo Community, Onwa na-etili Ora I of Ugbawka, Ijele I na Akaegbe-Ugwu, and Ada-Idaha of Efik Kingdom.
An engineering graduate of Carnegie Mellon University in the United States, Onyeabo returned to Nigeria to serve in various roles at both federal and state levels.
His appointments included deputy chairman of the Federal Capital Development Authority’s governing board, chairman of the governing councils for Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital and University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, as well as chairman of Nike Lake Resort Hotels in Enugu.
He also served as permanent secretary in the Enugu State Ministry of Works, Housing, and Transport, among other leadership positions.
He was a respected businessman, a member of the Noble Order of Knights of St. Mulumba, and an active member of the Catholic communities in Abuja and Enugu.
The family said details of his funeral will be announced later.
