President Tinubu Approves Multiple Appointments

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fast gaining a reputation for abrupt policy reversals and last-minute appointment changes, sparking criticism of what is seen as sloppy decision-making and poor internal coordination.

From the dramatic withdrawal of Maryam Shetty’s ministerial nomination while she was already at the Senate for screening, to the replacement of Muheeba Dankaka as Federal Character Commission (FCC) chairperson barely four hours after reappointment, the president’s flip-flops have left many Nigerians questioning the administration’s planning.

Seven Notable Reversals Under Tinubu

1. Muheeba Dankaka’s Four-Hour Reappointment

On Monday, President Tinubu reappointed Muheeba Dankaka for another five-year term as FCC chairperson. Four hours later, the presidency replaced her with former lawmaker Ayo Omidiran, citing no official reason.

Presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga, said Dankaka’s tenure had been dogged by controversy. Still, the confusion was apparent, even the Emir of Ilorin congratulated her before realising the announcement had been reversed.

2. INEC REC Nominees Withdrawn

On March 18, 2024, Tinubu withdrew the nomination of two INEC Resident Electoral Commissioners, Mohammad Ngoshe (Borno) and Owede Kosioma Eli (Bayelsa), days after naming them. Umar Mukhtar was reappointed REC for Borno, while Johnson Silnikiem got the Bayelsa slot.

3. CBN Board Nominee Dropped

Just two days after forwarding her name to the Senate, Tinubu withdrew the nomination of Ruby Onwudiwe as a member of the CBN board on March 14, 2024. Party pressure over her political affiliation reportedly influenced the decision.

4. Maryam Shetty’s Abrupt Ministerial Withdrawal

In August 2023, Maryam Shetty arrived at the Senate for ministerial screening only to discover her nomination had been withdrawn. Her name was replaced with Mariya Mahmoud’s, an episode that drew both sympathy and ridicule online.

5. NDDC Board Shake-Up In 24 Hours

On September 2, 2023, Tinubu replaced Cross River’s NDDC nominee, Asi Okang, with Orok Duke, and Ondo’s Victor Akinjo with Otito Atikase, just a day after announcing them. The switch followed protests from residents and APC members in both states.

6. FERMA Chair Nomination Reversed

On October 13, 2023, the presidency named Kashim Imam as chairman of the FERMA board. Less than a week later, the appointment was quietly withdrawn, with a statement from the State House stating that other board appointments were unaffected.

7. Board Dissolution With Last-Minute Exemptions

In June 2023, Tinubu dissolved the boards of all federal parastatals, agencies, and government-owned companies. Hours later, the SGF’s office clarified that NDLEA and NAFDAC were exempted, without offering any explanation.
