Barely two weeks after taking the oath of office, Councillor Oluwakemi Rufai, representing Ward C1 in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, has died.

Naija News reports that Rufai, the only female member of the legislative council, reportedly passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, August 13, 2025, after a brief illness.

The Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki LGA, Sesan Olowa, and his counterpart in Lekki Local Council Development Area, Rasaki Kasali, confirmed the incident in separate statements, describing it as a rude shock to the council and the community.

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), through its spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, expressed deep sadness over the loss, calling Rufai a “rising star within the APC” who embodied “commitment, grassroots service, and gender inclusion.”

Oladejo noted that despite her short time in office, Rufai demonstrated unwavering dedication to community development and loyalty to the party’s ideals.

“Her legacy of service, courage, and vision will not be forgotten,” he said, while extending condolences to Rufai’s family, the Ibeju-Lekki community, and her constituents.

Naija News recall that APC secured a clean sweep of the 20 chairmanship seats in the just-concluded Lagos State Local Government elections, reinforcing its dominance in the state’s grassroots political structure.

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) confirmed that the APC also clinched 375 of the 376 councillorship positions, leaving only one ward, Ward D in Yaba, for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
