No fewer than 592 terrorists have been killed by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in its recent fierce fight against insurgency in Borno State.
This was disclosed by the NAF’s spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, in a statement on Tuesday, following a courtesy visit by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, to Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum.
According to Ejodame, 372 enemy assets were destroyed in the past eight months, surpassing the total operational successes recorded in 2024.
During his visit, Air Marshal Abubakar outlined the successful offensive operations that targeted key terrorist infrastructure. He revealed that the airstrikes had destroyed 206 technical vehicles and 166 logistics hubs, deep within hostile territories.
The air raids spanned various strategic locations from Gonori to Rann, Dikwa to Damboa, and Azir to Mallam Fatori.
“The offensive has been intensified by the deployment of A-29 Super Tucano aircraft, capable of executing precision and night missions, Mi-171 helicopters for medical evacuation and logistics, and enhanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance platforms for round-the-clock target tracking,” Abubakar stated.
He further mentioned the impending addition of a Mi-35 gunship, which is expected to further enhance close-air support for ground troops engaged in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
Highlighting the NAF’s increased operational tempo, Air Marshal Abubakar shared impressive statistics from the ongoing operations.
“Backed by an upgraded fleet and precision night-strike capabilities, NAF aircraft executed 798 combat sorties, clocking over 1,500 operational flight hours in the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai,” he said.
He emphasised that this year, the air campaign had become “faster, sharper, and more surgical,” targeting high-value terrorists, crippling their logistics, and neutralising any cell that threatens the peace of the North-East.
The Chief of the Air Staff also lauded the Borno Model, which combines community-driven non-kinetic measures with decisive military action, calling it an effective strategy in the ongoing counter-insurgency efforts.
He stated that this model had played a crucial role in the success of the operation.
Abubakar also visited various facilities at the NAF Base, met with aircrew and ground personnel, and received operational briefings to ensure the continuation of the mission’s success.
He reaffirmed NAF’s commitment to precision air power, intelligence-led operations, and inter-agency collaboration to ensure the safety of all Nigerians.
In his response, Governor Babagana Zulum expressed his gratitude to the Nigerian Air Force for its consistent and unwavering support in degrading the capabilities of insurgents in the region.
He acknowledged the NAF’s pivotal role in safeguarding communities across Borno.
“Your operations have saved countless lives and allowed our communities to begin rebuilding,” Zulum said.
He further emphasised that the people of Borno recognise the sacrifices made by the NAF and continue to stand firmly behind them in their fight against terrorism.
The sustained air support and military efforts in Borno signal a continued commitment to reclaiming peace in the region, with the NAF’s efforts seen as a critical component in the battle to restore stability to the North-East.
