Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Tuesday, 12th August, 2025

1. Presidency Speaks On Tinubu’s Health Status Amidst Alleged Absence From State Functions

The Presidency has dismissed speculations about the health of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following reports that he was bedridden and being considered for urgent medical evacuation abroad.

The International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) had quoted sources alleging that the President had been indisposed for several days, resulting in his absence from key state functions. Vice President, Kashim Shettima has represented him at some official engagements in recent days.

The report further claimed that several of Tinubu’s scheduled activities were cancelled, with the remainder of his weekly agenda cleared to allow his medical team to closely monitor his condition.

However, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the claims as baseless.

“People just tell you all kinds of rumours that have no basis at all. He was in his office yesterday (August 5). I was with him. I went to see him. He came to work,” Onanuga told ICIR.

Speaking later to Daily Trust, he insisted nothing was wrong with the President.

“There is nothing wrong with the president, he is okay. He can choose to work from home. He can choose to work from anywhere. I tell you nothing is wrong with the president,” he said.

2. EFCC Detain Former Sokoto Governor, Tambuwal

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is currently grilling the immediate past Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal.

According to New Telegraph, Senator Tambuwal is currently at the anti-graft agency’s corporate headquarters in Abuja.

It was gathered that Tambuwal is being held over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals to the tune of ₦189 billion.

The withdrawals are in flagrant violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The governor arrived at the EFCC’s Headquarters around 11:30 am and faced interrogators on the alleged financial crime.

3. Ibom Air ‘Unruly Passenger’ Remanded In Prison

A passenger who assaulted airline officials on an Ibom Air flight inbound Lagos from Uyo, Comfort Emmanson, has been remanded in prison.

Naija News reports that the Special Adviser to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, made this known in a post via 𝕏 shortly after the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), said enforcement action will soon become more frequent in Nigerian airports as unruly conduct by passengers becomes rampant.

Moshood said Emmanson, who was earlier charged in court, has been remanded in the Kirikiri correctional facility.

He said, “The more reason the flying public should be more careful, the unruly passenger on Uyo-Lagos bound Ibom Air, Miss Comfort Emmanson, has been charged to court and she’s now cooling off in Kirikiri.”

4. Police Extend Tinted Glass Permit Deadline, Announce New Date

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has extended the grace period for the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit requirement for vehicles with tinted windows.

In a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force disclosed that the new enforcement date is now set for 2nd October, 2025.

Adejobi explained that the move was due to the surge in applications via its official portal, reflecting heightened public compliance with the directive.

5. ‘A Thousand Goodluck Jonathans Can Not Fix Nigeria’ – Farotimi

Human Rights Activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has dismissed suggestions that former President Goodluck Jonathan could return to the political frontline, insisting that Nigeria’s problems require deep structural reforms rather than another change in leadership.

Naija News reports that Farotimi was reacting to recent reports hinting at Jonathan’s possible re-emergence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the belief that bringing back Jonathan, or any other former leader, would solve Nigeria’s challenges is misguided.

He recalled how Jonathan was once heavily criticised and removed from office amid promises of a better Nigeria, yet the same problems persist a decade later.

The activist stressed that Nigeria’s crisis goes beyond personalities and warned that removing the current President Bola Tinubu without systemic reforms would simply perpetuate the cycle of failure.

6. EFCC Now Operates Like A Department Of The APC, Targeting Oppositions – ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of turning the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) into a political weapon against opposition politicians.

In a statement on Monday, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, alleged that the EFCC’s recent actions, including reopening old cases and summoning opposition members, were politically motivated.

The ADC claimed that the anti-graft agency had abandoned impartiality and now functioned like “a department of the APC, deployed to fight government critics and opposition figures.”

It also accused the EFCC of dropping investigations involving APC allies while relentlessly pursuing opposition leaders.

According to the ADC, the perceived partisanship was damaging the credibility of both the EFCC and Nigeria’s anti-corruption fight.

7. Is It Holy Spirit That Will Fuel Generator? – Odumodublvck Defends Church Donations

Popular Nigerian rapper, Odumodublvck, has stated that he would be willing to donate a billion naira to the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) if he could afford it.

Speaking via a post on 𝕏, the singer vowed that he and his household would continuously support the work of God.

He stressed that serving God is a matter of the heart, not a forced obligation, and that financial contributions alone do not guarantee spiritual salvation.

He emphasised that true devotion goes beyond monetary donations, adding that one’s actions and commitment to their faith truly count.

8. I’ll Expose Your Dirty Linens To Public If You Don’t Stop Gossiping About Me – Actress Sharon Francis Drags Destiny Etiko

A once-close Nollywood friendship appears to have collapsed as actress Sharon Francis publicly called out her former friend and colleague, Destiny Etiko, in a heated social media post.

Naija News reports that Francis took to her Instagram story to accuse Etiko of repeatedly making false and damaging claims about her to others in the industry.

She warned that she would not ignore the matter any longer, stating that she was prepared to confront Etiko directly if the alleged comments continued.

In her lengthy message, Francis accused Etiko of attempting to tarnish her reputation and hinted that she possessed personal details that could cause embarrassment if made public.

She further described herself as ready for a clash, warning that she would expose secrets if pushed further.

9. Crystal Palace Lose Europa League Appeal, Drop To Conference League

Crystal Palace will compete in the Europa Conference League this season after losing their appeal against UEFA’s decision to demote them from the Europa League.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday upheld UEFA’s ruling, confirming Nottingham Forest’s promotion into Palace’s vacated Europa League spot.

The decision arrived less than 24 hours after Palace celebrated winning the Community Shield at Wembley, edging Liverpool on penalties.

Palace secured European qualification by lifting the FA Cup last season but were penalised for breaching UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules.

Until June, American investor John Textor held a 43% stake in the Eagles and is also the majority owner of French side Lyon, another club in this season’s Europa League.

UEFA regulations bar teams under the decisive influence of the same person or entity from playing in the same European competition. Palace were given until March 1, 2025, to prove compliance through an ownership restructuring, but missed the deadline.

10. Shooting Stars’ Assistant Coach Slumps, Dies During Training

The newly appointed Assistant Coach of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), Ibadan, Oyo State, Akin Olowokere, on Monday morning, slumped and died during a training session.

Naija News reports that Olowokere, a former player and later tactician with Sunshine Stars of Akure, was unveiled only recently as part of the Oluyole Warriors’ new technical crew following the exit of the Gbenga Ogunbote-led coaching team.

Eyewitnesses who spoke with Punch on the incident, in Ibadan, said that the soft-spoken coach “slumped on the pitch during the team’s Monday morning training session and was rushed to the hospital.”

“He was, however, confirmed dead at the hospital where he was rushed to,” a source said.

It was gathered that he collapsed while actively involved in the training drills, prompting immediate medical attention before being taken to an undisclosed hospital.

Until his appointment at 3SC, Olowokere had been a regular face with Sunshine Stars as a player for several years before transitioning into a coaching role.
