
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from Monday to Wednesday, warning of possible flooding in several states.
In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms on Monday over the northern region, with moderate rains in parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa and Taraba states.
Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Taraba and Adamawa.
The agency warned of a high possibility of flooding in Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara and Sokoto during the forecast period.
For the central states, light rain is expected in parts of Niger in the morning, while thunderstorms with light rains are forecast in the FCT, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue and Kogi in the afternoon and evening.
NiMet said flooding is possible in parts of Plateau, Nasarawa and Niger during the period.
Southern States To Witness Continuous Showers
According to the weather alert, cloudy skies with intermittent light rains are expected on Monday morning in Ebonyi, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.
Later in the day, moderate rains are expected in Enugu, Edo, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Osun, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, Delta and Akwa Ibom, with flood risks in Delta, Imo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.
On Tuesday morning, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina and Kaduna, with further thunderstorms in the afternoon in Bauchi, Borno, Kano, Jigawa, Kaduna, Sokoto and Gombe.
In the central region, light rains are forecast for FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue and Kogi in the morning, followed by thunderstorms later in the day.
The southern region will see light rains in Oyo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross River, Lagos and Bayelsa in the morning, with rains continuing in the afternoon.
For Wednesday, NiMet anticipates morning thunderstorms in Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara, spreading across the entire North later in the day. The central states — Kwara, Niger, Kogi and Plateau — will have morning light rains and thunderstorms in the afternoon, while the South will experience light morning rains in Enugu, Ebonyi, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta and Bayelsa, with continuous rainfall later.
Safety and Advisory Measures
NiMet urged residents in flood-prone areas to activate emergency response systems and warned against driving under heavy rain. Farmers were advised to avoid applying fertilisers or pesticides just before the rains to prevent nutrient loss.
The agency also advised:
- Warm clothing for vulnerable persons due to low night temperatures.
- Fastening of loose objects to avoid accidents.
- Disconnection of electrical appliances during storms.
- Avoiding tall trees to prevent injuries from falling branches.
Airline operators were urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for flight planning, while residents were encouraged to monitor updates via the agency’s website [www.nimet.gov.ng].
