The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of stifling all opposition voices in Borno through every possible means.
The party declared its readiness to break the political stronghold of the APC in the state, promising to provide what it calls tough opposition and to rally behind whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Thursday during the official unveiling of the ADC in Maiduguri, the party’s state convener, Sheriff Banki, said, “Because of the crises facing major opposition parties in the country, which the present APC administration perpetuates, we have decided to go into a national coalition movement, which we believe cannot be controlled or manipulated by the APC.”
He stressed that Borno was in dire need of a viable opposition.
“As far as we are concerned, there is no opposition in the state. But starting from today, with the unveiling of this ADC, there will be tough opposition in Borno State that can checkmate and hold the government responsible,” Banki declared.
Banki said the decision to adopt the ADC was part of a broader national coalition to strengthen opposition politics, adding that the state chapter would work under the leadership of Atiku Abubakar in the North East and Kashim Imam in Borno.
“In this national movement, we do not want Borno to be left behind. We accept this coalition in good faith and have decided to join the national coalition movement and adopt the ADC as our political party,” he said.
He noted that members, both from the Obidient movement and other political blocs, had agreed to support whoever becomes the ADC’s presidential candidate in 2027.
Banki expressed optimism about the party’s chances in future elections, saying “Absolutely, we can win. What has always held us back from succeeding in the state is manipulation—both within and outside. In this case, with serious commitment and courage, I believe we can confront them, challenge them, and succeed in the struggle.”
The convener revealed that several political heavyweights had joined the ADC in Borno, including former governorship aspirants under the NNPP, a former PDP treasurer, ex-House of Assembly members, a former state secretary, and other party executives.
Naija News reports that the pioneer chairman of the ADC coalition in Borno, Mohammed Umar Bolori, expressed satisfaction with the turnout at the unveiling event.
“I am very much impressed with the large turnout of people who have come from far and near to grace this very important maiden meeting,” Bolori said.
He assured supporters of an inclusive approach: “We shall operate an open-door policy for inclusivity and grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 polls.”
PDP Dismisses Defections
In a swift reaction, the Publicity Secretary of the PDP in Borno, Amos Adziba, downplayed the defections, claiming that most of those who joined the ADC were not genuine PDP members.
“We are not bothered because most of them have no political impact or relevance to us. Even the APC suffers similar issues,” Adziba stated.
He alleged that some decampees failed to follow due process in leaving the PDP.
“If you are a genuine member of the party and you are decamping, you are expected to inform your ward, tender a resignation letter along with your membership card. But in this case, most of them just type a resignation letter and post it on Facebook for monetary gain,” Banki alleged.
