Panic gripped residents of the Iwo Road area of Ibadan on Wednesday night after a diesel-laden tanker lost control and crashed, spilling its contents and injuring one person.

Naija News reports that the incident occurred near Jin-Jofes Filling Station around 8:07 p.m., sparking fears of a possible explosion as the 50,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) gushed uncontrollably from the tanker into a nearby gutter.

Confirming the development, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, said the accident was triggered by a loss of control at a sharp bend.

“On getting there, a DAF tanker with registration number T17657LA (Lagos), carrying 50,000 litres of diesel, had skidded off the road into a nearby gutter and its content was gushing out,” Akinwande stated.

According to the fire service boss, his office received a distress call from one Mr. Adisa Kazeem, and swiftly mobilised personnel to the scene under the leadership of ACFS Adeniyi Adesina.

“The firemen quickly blanketed the spillage with chemical foam compound so as to neutralise the flammability of the content,” he explained.

He noted that while the driver and motor boy were both rescued alive, the motor boy sustained a minor shoulder injury and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

Akinwande lauded the Nigeria Police Force and the Amotekun Corps for their prompt response, saying order and vehicular movement have since been restored in the area.
