Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, has expressed confidence in his team’s readiness ahead of their Group D opener against Senegal at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Zanzibar City.
The home-based Super Eagles vs Senegal CHAN clash is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. later today, August 5.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Monday, Eric Chelle acknowledged the strength of the opposition and the significance of the fixture.
“I don’t know if it’s a derby, but I know this is a match between two big countries in African football, Senegal and Nigeria,” Chelle said. “There is a lot of history between them. They’ve both produced great teams and generations over time, and this will be a great game.”
Senegal, the defending champions, begin their title defence against a Nigerian side returning to the CHAN for the first time since 2018. Nigeria reached the final that year but lost 4-0 to Morocco.
Chelle stated that the Super Eagles B are fully prepared following an intensive four-week training camp.
“Our preparation has been very good, we are ready to play this first game and to apply everything we have worked on during the past four weeks,” he said.
Tuesday’s match at the Amaan Stadium will be the first time Nigeria and Senegal face each other in the history of the CHAN. Senegal are currently unbeaten in their last 10 CHAN matches in regulation time and have never lost to a West African side in open play at the tournament.
Nigeria, on the other hand, have scored 25 goals in their 15 CHAN matches to date and will be looking to improve on past performances, including a third-place finish in 2014 and a runners-up spot in 2018.
