The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed reports that its chairman, Ola Olukoyede, abducted and forced the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bayo Ojulari, to resign.
According to EFCC sources who spoke with The Cable, the claim, which surfaced in an online publication on Saturday, is “ridiculous and mischievous.”
The report had alleged that Ojulari was detained by the EFCC on Friday and compelled to sign a resignation letter, with the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Ajayi, purportedly involved in the plot.
Speaking to The Cable, an EFCC insider clarified that there was no basis for such an allegation, as Olukoyede does not possess the power to hire or remove appointees.
The source said, “There is no need for Olukoyede to abduct or force anyone to resign because he is not an appointing authority.
“If he needs anyone to account for anything, he does it by writing or inviting the person formally. Whatever does not follow such procedures is not true and should not be taken seriously.”
The official further emphasised that the EFCC chairman has never used coercion or intimidation in the discharge of his duties.
The source added, “EFCC chairman is not a bully. He is a law-abiding chief executive of the nation’s most important anti-graft agency.
“Olukoyede has never abducted, coerced, tortured or caused anyone to resign his position at any time.”
