Newcastle United have confirmed the season-long loan signing of former Arsenal goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale, from Southampton.

Aaron Ramsdale, 27, cited the opportunity to work again with manager Eddie Howe as a key factor in making the move.

Recall that Howe signed Ramsdale in 2017 during his time at Bournemouth, and the pair enjoyed a strong working relationship.

“Working with the manager and his coaching staff again was a big draw for me,” Ramsdale said. “They’ve already had a great influence on my career and the gaffer turned me from a man into a professional footballer at Bournemouth. He really showed me the ropes, so the manager and his coaching staff were a huge selling point for me to come here.”

Ramsdale becomes Newcastle’s third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest and Antonio Cordero from Malaga.

The Magpies shifted focus to Ramsdale after Manchester City beat them to the signing of James Trafford from Burnley.

Despite his experience, Ramsdale arrives with a mixed record. He was part of the Southampton team that went down with just 12 points last season and has also suffered relegation with Bournemouth, Sheffield United, and Chesterfield earlier in his career.

Last season, the out-of-favour England international conceded 66 goals and kept only three clean sheets in 30 Premier League appearances.

Nevertheless, Ramsdale brings a wealth of top-flight experience, with 183 Premier League games under his belt, just 38 fewer than current Newcastle number one Nick Pope.

He is also the second England international goalkeeper to sign for Newcastle in recent years, following Pope’s historic cap against Italy at the San Siro in 2022.

Meanwhile, Newcastle remain firm on keeping striker Alexander Isak, having turned down a £110 million bid from Liverpool on Friday. The Swedish forward is valued at £150 million by the club.

Veteran goalkeeper Martin Dubravka also remains part of the squad but will turn 37 in January.
