The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano Strategic Command has announced the arrest of 49 suspects involved in various drug-related offences.
Naija News understands that the arrests were made during a series of raids conducted on August 7 and August 8 as part of efforts to curb the growing menace of drug crimes in the state.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, revealed that the agency dislodged several key locations known for drug activities, resulting in the arrest of 34 suspects from various areas across Kano.
According to Maigatari, the raids targeted areas including Massallacin Idi, Fagge Plaza, Kofar Mata, Kofar Wambai, Kofar Dan’agundi, Makabartar Dan’agundi, Ladanai, Zage, and Tashar Rimi at Rimi Market.
The operation also extended to Kano Line Motor Park and Tashar Rami Motor Park in Na’ibawa, where 15 more suspects were apprehended.
Items recovered from the suspects include various illicit substances such as cannabis sativa, Pregabalin, diazepam, codeine syrup, Rohypnol, “suck and die”, rubber solution, and locally made weapons.
The NDLEA State Commander, Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, explained that the operation was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle drug joints and disrupt the networks of drug dealers across Kano.
“Since the elevation of the NDLEA’s operations to a strategic command level, there has been a notable increase in the effectiveness and scope of our work,” Idris-Ahmad stated.
He also commended the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Retired Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba-Marwa, for his steadfast leadership and support in driving the agency’s efforts to ensure a drug-free society.
“Buba-Marwa’s commitment to a drug-free society empowers our team to pursue our mission with renewed vigour,” he added.
Idris-Ahmad further urged those involved in drug trafficking to cease their activities, warning that the NDLEA would not back down in its pursuit of a drug-free society.
“The NDLEA remains dedicated to protecting the public from the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking,” he said.
The investigation is still ongoing, and once completed, the suspects will be charged in court.
This operation underscores the NDLEA’s ongoing commitment to combat drug abuse and trafficking, with authorities sending a clear message that no one is above the law in the fight against illicit drug activities.
