2027: 'Protect Tinubu, Southern Nigeria From Northern Power Mongers' - APC Chieftain Urges Southern Elders

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has called on political and traditional leaders in Southern Nigeria to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and shield him from what he described as a small group of Northern elites determined to scuttle his 2027 re-election bid.

Speaking with journalists in Osogbo on Sunday, Oyintiloye said President Tinubu had long been a friend of the North and supported its political causes, stressing that he deserved the region’s backing for a second term.

He warned, however, that a recurring trend in the nation’s political history showed that whenever a Southerner became President, a splinter group from the North would form a clique to undermine and blackmail the administration.

“This has been recurring, and the nation’s political history won’t forget the kind of intimidation Southern Presidents often suffered at the hands of very few men from the North who always mount serious opposition to the re-election bid of such a President.

“But in the case of President Bola Tinubu, he has done enough to get the support of the major power block in the North. Therefore, the time has come for the region to further put the tiny few behind the mischief being plotted against the President where they really belong,” he said.

The former lawmaker urged Southern political leaders and royal fathers not to align themselves with “rejected politicians from the North” working against the President.

“This support is necessary to put an end to the consistent, negative political trajectory that second-term bids, whenever a Southerner is the President, often follow. They should shield the President against unwarranted attacks from just a handful of politicians from the North,” Oyintiloye added.

He appealed to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who chairs the Council of Southern Traditional Rulers, along with co-chairmen Obi of Obinugwu, Cletus Illomuanya; King Jaja of Opobo, Dandeson Jaja; and the Council’s Secretary, Benjamin Ikenchuku Keagborekuzi I, the Dein of Agbor, to lead the charge in mobilising regional support for Tinubu.

Rise To The Occasion – Oyintiloye Urges Obasanjo, Jonathan, Others

According to him, these leaders should also collaborate with their Northern counterparts to secure the President’s victory in 2027.

Oyintiloye further urged prominent Southern figures such as former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former President Goodluck Jonathan, Prof. Wole Soyinka, former Senate President Ken Nnamani, and other elders to rise to the occasion and prevent a repeat of negative history.

“They should defend Southern Nigeria from the few Northern power mongers,” he said.

Oyintiloye expressed confidence that Tinubu’s second term would help stabilise Nigeria and ensure fairness in the federal government’s developmental agenda for all regions.

He maintained that the President’s continued leadership would advance unity and equitable distribution of infrastructure across the country.
