The Deputy National Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed concern that Peter Obis pledge to serve only one term if elected president in 2027 could undermine the spirit of Nigerias 1999 Constitution. According to Timothy Osadolor, the Labour Party candidates promise is both unnecessary and potentially damaging to the countrys democratic structure. Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, August 5, Osadolor criticized Obis vow, arguing that it contradicts the constitutional provision allowing a president to serve up to two terms.I dont believe such statements have a place in a democracy. The Constitution clearly allows for an eight-year tenure. Committing to just one term could devalue the electoral process and sets a bad precedent, Osadolor said. He emphasized that political campaigns should be focused on a candidates competence, leadership qualities, and vision for national unitynot symbolic gestures. Osadolor further accused Obi of using emotional appeals to sway public opinion while disregarding constitutional principles. If youre running on the basis of capacity, competence, and unity, let that be your message. But saying, Ill only serve four years, is unnecessary and misleading, he said. What Nigeria needs now is a true healer and a capable administrator who can guide the nation out of its current challenges. That should be the priority, he added.
